Huntington, WV (HNN) – Law enforcement experience prevailed over administrative background as Tom McComas handily defeated Scott Bias 5,870 to 2,988. In fact, former chief deputy C.A. Adams took second place with 3,341 votes. Herman Beckett and Greg Lawson finished fourth and fifth with 1,963 and 1,493 votes.

“I think the voters wanted law enforcement experience… and the voters embraced the changes I want to make in the [Sheriff’s ] Department to bring us into the future,” McComas said. “The public has heard what I have to say and believe my sincerity in thinking I can make a difference for the county for the citizens.”

Current Sheriff Kim Wolfe also said the result showed voters wanted law enforcement experience in the sheriff’s office. As for the November matchup between McComas and current chief deputy , Jim Scheidler, Wolfe said it will be a good race with two career law enforcement officials vying for the position.

Republican candidate Jim Scheidler congratulated McComas, too. In an interview, he said that no matter who wins in the general election, the people of Cabell County have already won due to the experience of each candidate.

“The voters have the choice of two excellent candidates for sheriff, regardless of who wins, I feel the department will be run well. The voters can’t lose. For the first time ever, they are going to have a good sheriff either way.”
