Huntington, WV (HNN) – One of the nation’s largest theatre chains will construct a 12-screen stadium seating theatre at the Huntington Mall. Cinemark, which operates the Cinema 10 in Ashland, Ky., announced that they will within ten days begin demolition of the Huntington Mall’s vacant six-screen complex along with the former Morrison’s Cafeteria space next door.
The Cinemark building will contain more than 3,000 seats in 12 stadium seating auditoriums with gaming and concession areas, said Joseph Johnston, property manager for the Huntington Mall. The new Huntington Mall theatre will contain a full concession stand with bulk and packaged candy, freshly popped popcorn, Eisenberg hot dog, and Coca-Cola fountain drinks. The structure will include a CinemaCafe which features Edy’s Ice Cream, Starbucks Coffee , pizza and other treats.
Stadium seating at the complex will consist of plush, high-backed rocking seats featuring a 16-inch height difference between each row and a 48 inch span between each aisle. The aisle space provides leg room and space to enter and exit without disturbing other guests, the Cinemark release said.
Cinemark operates 3,650 screens at 287 theatres in 38 states making it the third largest theatre circuit in the United States.
“The 12-screen theatre combined with the mall amenities will create a complete entertainment destination,” said Time Warner, president of Cinemark. Huntington Mall has been without a theatre since the six-screen one operated first by General Cinema then by Carmike shut down in 2006.
The release indicates that demolition and building permits have already been issued by Barboursville for the project. The former theatre and cafeteria space will be combined with an additional area to bring the complex to 48,000 square feet.
Joe Johnston, property manager of the Huntington Mall stated, “This announcement of our state of the art theatre is the latest indicator of the Huntington Mall’s commitment to remain the premier shopping, service and entertainment venue in the Tri-State Area.”
Since the closing of the Huntington Mall’s smaller theatre, Marquee Cinemas opened its 16-screen Pullman Square complex in Downtown Huntington, which was the first theatre in the Huntington market to offer stadium seating. Since then, a ten-screen stadium seating complex opened at The Galleria, just outside Ashland, Ky. Frank Theatres/All Star Cinemas operate the ten screen Teays Valley Cinemas in Hurricane, W.Va.
The Charleston market has numerous stadium seating cinemas including GHTC’s Park Place Stadium Cinemas downtown, Marquee’s in the Southridge section, and Great Escape in Cross Lanes.
Although the release notes say this will be the “first theatre to the Huntington area” for Cinemark, it does not refer to its Ashland Cinema 10 property, which sits opposite Ashland Towne Centre and near Office Max.
