Special to Huntingtonnews.net

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- It’s just been a couple of weeks since students in Cabell County said “goodbye” for the summer, but for some elementary, middle and high school students that break will be short-lived. Starting Tuesday, June 24, 2008, they will be heading back to class to take part in Cabell County Schools’ summer programs.

Elementary Students

Cabell County’s Basic Skills Camp provides students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade with additional instruction in reading, language arts, and mathematics. Students are identified through reading and math assessment data provided to each school principal in April. Basic Skills Camp runs similar to a child’s normal school day, but for only three hours each day. The student will be assigned a classroom teacher who will provide daily instruction in reading, math, and writing. Students will also be provided lunch free each day. Basic Skills Camp begins on Tuesday, June 24 and ends on Thursday, July 24. Students do not attend on Fridays.

Basic Skills Camp will be offered at three schools:
· At Milton Elementary, including students from Culloden, Nichols and Ona Elementary Schools; Times: 9:30 AM -12:30 PM

· At Village of Barboursville Elementary, including students from Salt Rock, Martha, Davis Creek, Cox Landing, Altizer, Geneva Kent, Guyandotte, Highlawn, and Peyton Elementary Schools; Times: 8:30AM -11:30 AM

· At Central City Elementary, including students from Hite-Saunders, Meadows, Spring Hill, and Southside Elementary Schools; Times: 9:45 AM -12:45 AM

Middle School Students

Cabell County’s JumpStart provides students who have completed sixth through eighth grades with the opportunity to recover credit in order to be promoted through additional instruction in reading, language arts, and mathematics. Students are identified by their principal and teachers initially by examining the students’ grades for the first five grading periods. A final decision on a student’s eligibility is verified at the end of the final six-weeks grading period. JumpStart runs similar to a child’s normal school day, but for only three hours each day. Students will receive 50-60 minutes instruction daily in reading, math, and language arts. Students will also be provided lunch free each day. JumpStart begins on Tuesday, June 24 and ends on Thursday, July 24.

JumpStart will be offered at the Cabell County Career Technology Center, 1035 Norway Avenue, Huntington, from 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM daily.

High School Students

Cabell County’s Summer Extended Time allows students who have participated in the required 8100 minutes of instruction for a core class required for graduation additional time to master the skills taught in those classes. The summer will be used to extend the instructional time beyond the 8100 minutes allowing the student additional time and instruction to master the skills and content as prioritized in the essential elements of the course.

Each student enrolled will be administered a pre-test in the subject area to assess skills and knowledge. The teacher will then design instruction to re-teach missing skills using a variety of methods including direct instruction, peer coaching, and self-study. The students are then administered an exit test on the identified deficiencies. Students may enroll for one to three courses.

Grading:
· The minimum mastery level on the exit test will be 70%.

· Students enter the summer program with a failing grade at no lower than 60%. (For students whose final grade for a course was lower than 60%, the final grade will be adjusted to 60% for the purpose of calculating the final grade for extended instruction).

· The mastery score from the exit test and the final course grade will be averaged to determine the final grade for the class. [For example: A student who has failed English I (63% = F) and after participating in extended time during the summer, scores 78% on the exit exam, will be awarded the final grade of 71% for the course].
Classes begin on Tuesday, June 24 and end Tuesday, July 29 and will be conducted in the Alternative School at the Cabell County Schools Central Office. For more information, please contact Sherri Woods by calling (304) 528-5206.
