Huntington District Corps of Engineers Announces New Deputy Commander

Huntington, WV (HNN) - Lt. Col. Jason Smallfield is the new deputy commander for the Huntington District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As deputy commander, Smallfield serves as chief of staff and is responsible for sound management of the district's $250 million operating budget and for support of its nine lock and dam projects and 35 flood damage reduction dams.
Smallfield came into active duty in 1992 upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. After completing U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in 2003 and the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) in 2004, Smallfield was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. with the 82nd Airborne Division, where he served as assistant division engineer. He also served as operations officer of the 307th Engineer Battalion and the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion; executive officer of the 4-73rd Cavalry Squadron; and operations officer of the 2-508 Infantry Battalion from 2004-2008.
He has deployed in support of Joint Task Force Katrina, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Smallfield's education includes a bachelor's degree in international political science, a master's degree in engineering management, and two master's degrees in military arts and sciences which he earned in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
The Huntington District is one of 45 Corps districts and is responsible for 311 miles of the Ohio River, with the district's boundary stretching across 45,000 square miles in parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina. The 900 employees of the district oversee water resource management activities, including commercial navigation, flood control, recreation at Corps constructed lakes and wetland protection. The district also serves as the engineering agency of choice for many other government entities.
