Huntington, WV (HNN) --- Cabell Huntington Hospital has added a state-of-the-art surgical table that will expand the hospital's comprehensive total hip replacement services.

The recent purchase of the hana® surgical table is another milestone for Cabell Huntington Hospital's Mary H. Hodges Joint Replacement Center, said Ali Oliashirazi, MD, the Center's surgical director and professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

"We are proud to be one of the few centers to have purchased this table, which is used for fracture repair, for hip arthroscopy and for making it easier to perform the true anterior, or front, approach during hip replacement surgery" Dr. Oliashirazi said.

The first goal with the table will be to do a study comparing the use of computer assistance during hip replacement from the "back" approach to the true anterior or "front" approach using the table and x-ray guidance.

The anterior approach to the hip has been used for many years, but this new table makes this approach easier. The study will look at a variety of areas, including component positioning and muscle damage.

The Joint Replacement Program at Cabell Huntington Hospital is the number one ranked program in West Virginia and among the top 5 percent (highest ranking) in the nation for joint replacement, according to the HealthGrades® Hospital Quality in America Study.
