MU Recreation Center Open House Draws More than
4,000 Visitors

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- More than 4,000 people came to see the new Marshall University Recreation Center that opened with an open house on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2009 at the corner of Fifth Avenye and 20th Street in Huntington.
Lines were long to sign up for the new recreation services when the doors opened about 2 p.m. and still remained long about 4 p.m.
Many students were quickly taking advantage of Marshall's newest $30 million dollar building playing sports like basketball, racquetball, swimming and volleyball. Other students were using the exercise equipment and exercise rooms in the 123,000 square foot building.
Marshall University Board of Governors Member John G. Hess said, "Wow. This is impressive, " has he walked through the building.
Hess that has toured and seen other recreation centers at other college institutions and considers the one at Marshall as being one of the best in the country.
The recreation center has a swimming pool, a 1/7 mile running track and a climbing wall. There are also courts for basketball, volleyball, racquetball, badminton and pickleball. There is also a lot of exercise equipment like treadmills, step machines and weight machines.
A full range of instructional and fitness programs are being offered to individuals and groups like personal trainers, nutrition consultation, fitness evaluation and body fat assessment.
The new Marshall University Recreation Center is open 5:30 a.m. until midnight Monday through Thursday. On Friday it will close at 11 p.m. Saturday hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday hours are from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
