Huntington, WV (HNN) - A fifth grade student from Cox’s Landing Elementary School in Lesage was honored with the title of “National Patroller of the Year” for his dedication in protecting his fellow classmates, according to officials at AAA East Central.
Jeremiah Parlock, 12, son of Elizabeth McQuaid Parlock, was nominated by his school principal, Laura Cooper and safety patrol advisor, Loretta Chapman, because of his exemplary demonstration of safety skills and leadership skills during his safety patrol shift.
“AAA is so proud to honor Jeremiah with the ‘National Patroller of the Year Award’,” said J.J. Miller, AAA Safety Advisor. “Jeremiah has exhibited the pride and dedication that is important for a patroller to be successful in the position. Jeremiah has made the safety of his classmates a priority.”
Parlock was among approximately several hundred applicants who were nominated for the honor. He wrote an essay focusing on his experience as a patroller and the importance of community service.
In addition to his responsibility as a safety patroller, Jeremiah is also a Boy Scout, is an avid jump roper, enjoys learning and is a math whiz. He attributes his leadership abilities to having his mother as a positive role model.
Part of his reward included a trip to Washington, D.C. AAA hosted an awards luncheon at the Hyatt in Bethesda, Maryland, where Parlock was one of 11 patrollers honored for his efforts.
“This trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Jeremiah and his family,” Miller said. “AAA is proud to continue this tradition which started 89 years ago,” she added.
The awards ceremony was the culmination of a three-day event in the nation’s capital honoring the students that included a trip to the White House and U.S. Capitol as well as an exclusive hands-on, behind-the-scenes VIP event with the FBI.
AAA started the national school safety patrol movement in 1920. Today, the AAA School Safety Patrol is an organization of 500,000 boys and girls nationwide in 30,000 schools. Many famous Americans have been safety patrollers including former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, as well as several U.S. Supreme Court Justices, U.S. Senators, governors and U.S. Olympic gold medalists. AAA feels the program helps young people become leaders by teaching discipline and responsibility.
