By Huntingtonnews.net Staff
South Point, Ohio (HNN) - The precautionary boil water advisory in Huntington has now been extended to portions of Lawrence County that purchase water from Huntington.
Here's the press release from Ohio American Water:
Ohio American Water’s Lawrence County District has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for all of its customers in Chesapeake and South Point, Ohio.
Approximately 3,350 customers in the area are under the precautionary boil water advisory. Customers are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for a minimum of one minute. Tap water is okay for washing/bathing.
Do not use home filtering devices in place of water that has been boiled as most home a filtering devices will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms. Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
West Virginia American Water – Huntington District which provides the water sold by Ohio American Water’s Lawrence County District, lost water pressure due to a main break and issued a boil water advisory to its customers including Ohio American Water. As a result, Ohio American Water is advised by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to also issue a precautionary boil advisory to its customers. Boil water advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer's best interests in mind. It's possible, but unlikely, that bacteria could enter the water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.
During the precautionary boil water advisory, the water company performs a series of tests to determine if the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. Precautionary boil water advisories usually last from 24 to 36 hours. Samples are taken from several sites within the affected area. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until the company is confident that no bacteria have entered the water supply. Customers are requested to honor the boil advisory until further notice.
Customers can call our Customer Service Center at 1-800-673-5999 for the latest updates.
