Huntington, WV (HNN) - Water returned to 60,000 Huntington customers early Saturday morning, after technicians fixed a major break near the water plant on 24th Street and First Avenue. That’s the good news, as some sources feared the water loss could have lasted significantly longer depending upon the location of the break.

Despite restoration, a boil water advisory remains in effect until further notice. Water samples were taken Saturday. The advisory will remain until tests confirm its safety. The advisory includes the South Point and Chesapeake, Ohio areas. Ohio’s EPA issued that boil advisory.

Kathy Gillenwater, a spokeswoman for West Virginia American Water, stressed that the boil water advisory remains in effect until further notice. The company will notify the media when boiling is no longer necessary.

On Saturday, free bottled water was available at the #1 fire station.

Due to the boil water advisory, some restaurants closed Saturday, including Starbucks and Five Guys at Pullman Square. Others selling bottled or caned refreshment stayed open. The closure of some restaurants did not prevent the Jazz MU Tazz Concert from going forward on the square. Movies continued rolling at Marquee’s Pullman and the Discount Cinema on Fourth Avenue, although fountain drinks were unavailable.

Other nearby regions have complained about water issues, including Lavalette, WV, which originally had not been affected. Some residents in the Pea Ridge district complained about brown water coming from the tap.

West Virginia American Water issued the following instructions, both for AFTER the boil advisory is lifted and instructions on what water usages necessitate boiling:

Water pressure may contain air. Please turn faucets SLOWLY, to allow air pressure to leave the water lines. This may take a few minutes.

* Also, air pressure may be in several faucets in your household. Just because you clear the air pressure in one sink, doesn't mean another one doesn't contain air pressure as well. Turn on faucets CAUTIOUSLY for the first few times.

* Water may appear brown from faucets and outlets not used since the outage. Please let the faucets run for a minute. Be cautious when washing clothes as well, as water could stain clothing unless the washer is run through a wash cycle first.

* Water for the next few days may appear milky, even after the boil water advisory has been lifted. This will likely be air in the water. If you fill a glass with water, you should notice the water will become clear within minutes as the air rises to the surface. This issue is only for AFTER the BOIL WATER ADVISORY has been lifted. As of this post, ALL WEST VIRGINIA AMERICAN WATER customers in the Huntington area are expected to boil water until further notice.

The break in the main city water line at 24th Street and First Avenue occurred early Friday evening June 26. At its height 60,000 customers were without water
