The Farmers' Market got it start with the Tailgate Farmers' Market in 1979. A group of farmers and businessmen, along with the West Virginia University Extension Service, gathered to discuss the possibility of organizing a farmers' market, according to the Central City website. Bank One and WTCR were the sponsors. Thus the Huntington Tailgate Market was officially incorporated. The market was first located at the Department of Human Services property on Route 10 just south of Huntington. After a couple of years, the farmers' market moved its location to Ninth Street and Third Avenue where it remained until 1997. Then, in 1998, the Cabell County Tailgate Farmer's Market moved to Central City on 14th Street West.

You’ll see in the photo gallery two well-known local office holders in attendance on the first day. Delegate Carol Miller sold bison meat, while Cabell County Circuit Court Judge Dan O’Hanlon brought honey.

The market located at 555 14th Street West is open 7 a.m. until sold out Monday through Saturday.
