Huntington, WV (HNN) – Members of the Cabell County Board of Education called a special session, Tuesday, June 30, for discussion of a real estate matter with their attorneys. Due to attorney/client privilege, the board members will meet in executive session (behind closed doors).

After almost three hours behind closed doors, no votes were taken on the property and litigation matters. However, those items will be placed on an amended agenda for the next meeting of the board, Monday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Speculation has suggested that the item under discussion relates to acquisition of the University Heights property, which the board wants for a middle school. Prestera bought the fourteen acres which includes an historic African- American orphanage from Marshall University for $2.31 million.

Both Cabell County School Superintendent William Smith and Prestera Center director Robert Hansen have previously stated that their attorneys are negotiating the property issue. Both would like to avoid the expenses associated with eminent domain.

However, preservationists Karen Nance and Susan Gillette are joined on a complaint filed in March by Prestera.

Should the board and Prestera reach a settlement, the historic issues would likely still remain for either state or federal litigation.
