Huntington, WV (HNN) -- Rep. Nick J. Rahall, D-WV, recently toured the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

Premature and critically ill newborns receive care at the unit, which is one of only three Level III units in West Virginia. The NICU has increased to 36 beds along with one isolation area for babies requiring constant supervision. The unit contains a step down area for babies that do not require critical care but need special attention.

“I have been a long-time supporter of children’s health initiatives, and welcomed the opportunity to see first-hand, the technology and skills required by doctors and nurses to care for critically ill children,” Rahall said. “The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cabell Huntington Hospital is a showplace of technology and compassionate care, thanks in part to the talented specialists and staff of Marshall University’s Department of Pediatrics, who are dedicated to the health of our children. This children’s hospital contributes to our region’s economic growth, and adds incentive for businesses and young families with children to come to the Huntington area.”

According to the hospital website, the NICU staff prepares father, mother and baby for life at home through home care training, physical therapy, and development testing. Cabell Huntington’s NICU has become a leader in respiratory management for “very low birth weight infants.”

The hospital also provides supervised air and ground support for high-risk mothers, infants and children throughout the region.
