Thousands of Fans Attend Youth Soccer Regional Championship Opening Ceremony

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- Thousands of people came to Joan C. Edwards Stadium to see the opening of the US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional I Championships with an impressive Olympic style opening on Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2009.
The 82nd. Airborne Division All American Free Fall Team brought
a 750 square foot American Flag in by parachute to the field flying over
the west stands right on time and to the targeted area to the applause
of the crowd.
State Sen. Bob Plymale gave greetings and served as Master of Ceremonies. West Virginia Soccer Association President Len Rogers welcomed all to the event.
Soccer teams marched around the stadium in colorful style many shouting or waving to family and friends in the stands It was quite a spectacle. Music and song was provided by the 249th West Virginia National Guard Band and famed singer Randall Reid Smith.
The honor of making the torch run went to members of the West Virginia 1997 Region 1 Champions.
An estimated 22,000 were in attendance. Traffic flow after the event was similar to that of a Marshall University football game. The Huntington Police and Marshall University Police had the traffic situation under control moving cars out at a steady pace.
