Washington, DC (HNN) – The U.S. Census Bureau has released 2006 Health Insurance Coverage in West Virginia, as well as throughout the nation. The Bureau has county and state health insurance available on line. The interactive data allows researchers to display varying demographic results.
For instance, Cabell County has an estimated 13,002 uninsured individuals (with a Margin of Error of 1,708) in a county demographic group of all income levels that totals 77,541. Based on those statistics about 16.8% of Cabell County residents do not have health insurance.
Kanawha County has 27,171 uninsured individuals out of a possible 160,253 individuals in the county ( 17.0% do not have insurance).
Monongalia County has 18,976 uninsured out of a possible 72,637, or about 26.1% uninsured.
On percentages alone, Calhoun County has the most uninsured with 25.9%. Mingo (14.7%), Boone (14.9%), Raleigh (15.5%), Wood (15.6%), and Putnam (15.8%) have the lowest percentages using the same variables as with Cabell i.e. both sexes, all income levels, under 65 years.
(Using the same data for STATES, West Virginia has 18.1% uninsured, about 275,611 souls. Minnesota has the lowest percentage with 9.4% closely followed by Massachusetts at 9.6% and Wisconsin with 9.9%. States with the highest uninsured percentages in 2006 were Texas 27.6%, New Mexico 25.8%, Florida 24.9%, and Louisiana 23.2%.)
By altering the income to those “at or below 200% of the poverty level,” the dynamics change. Cabell has about 8,069 uninsured in that group which is a 27.6% (with a 4.2% margin of error). Kanawha County has 12,010 or about 23.1% uninsured, while Monongalia has 13,831 but their percentage climbs to 56%. Raleigh has 23.8%, Wood has a 24.4%, and Putnam County has a 39.3% rate.
Marion County scored in the 40s with 44.8% as did Morgan County 43.7%, and Pendleton County 42.5%.
Mason County had only 13.9% uninsured, which was the Mountain State’s best ranking.
