Washington, DC (HNN) – The final version of a spending measure containing $1.5 million in earmarks secured by U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall, D-WV for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Cabell County, and an additional $1 million for water and waste water infrastructure improvements across southern West Virginia, passed the House 308-114.

“With money I secured in this bill, the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) will be able to continue ongoing work to protect residents in the Milton area from flooding and enhance Huntington’s Harris Riverfront park,” said Rep. Rahall.

“Additional funding I secured will benefit the Southern West Virginia Environmental Infrastructure program, which I worked to establish to bring water and wastewater infrastructure to households across southern West Virginia, connecting basic services to those who need them most,” said Rep. Rahall.

Rahall included $1,384,000 in the bill to complete a levee and channel relocation as part of the Lower Mud River Flood Control project. Once finished, this project will lower the risk of flood damage in the area surrounding the town of Milton. Working closely with Senator Robert C. Byrd, Rahall has helped to secure more than $7 million for Lower Mud River since 1998.

An additional $90,000 Rahall secured in the bill will fund planning for enhancements to Harris Riverfront Park, in Huntington.

Another $1 million in funding secured by Rahall in the bill will enable the Corps to improve wastewater infrastructure and complete environmental restoration work across southern West Virginia. This new funding is in addition to the $4.8 million provided earlier this year to the Southern West Virginia Environmental Infrastructure Program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Rahall supported.

“I worked to develop the Southern West Virginia Environmental Infrastructure Program to extend water and wastewater services and improve the quality of life for the citizens of southern West Virginia,” said Rahall.

The Conference Report on Fiscal Year 2010 Energy and Water Appropriations Act (H.R. 3183), will now be considered by the Senate.
