Huntington, WV (HNN) – Marshall University’s Department of Music contributed their student guitar ensemble from the studio of Dr. Julio Alves for an appearance at the Morris Building, 845 Fourth Avenue. Following classics and original compositions, a local Huntington music staple, The 1937 Flood, took the floor.

The Flood has a “where they are now” look to it, especially concerning former newspersons from the Herald- Dispatch. Dave Peyton, who used to upend the establishment with his columns, plays in the Flood, as does former newspaperman Charles Bowen, who’s now a freelance author and operates the website design firm, Designs by Bowen. Peyton, a former contributor to HNN, now pens his columns for the Charleston Daily Mail.

Music concluded at Smith Recital Hall on the campus of Marshall University where visiting musician in residence, Turev Berki, a pianist from Turkey, joined cellist Dr. Solen Dikener and violinist Ian Jessee.

Berki will perform a solo piano recital Wednesday, October 21, at the First Presbyterian Church.

On Monday, Kevin Stolarick, research director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto, and David Wiley, of Brigham Young University, spoke at the conference in the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

The conference concludes Tuesday, Oct. 20, with a presentation by Anya Kemenetz (the author of Yahoo’s Generation Debt) on “MicroGrid Energy and New Economy Innovation, and during lunch Marcus Jodotte, managing director Public Affairs and Diversity for NASCAR, shares lessons on developing proactive diversity programs which open new markets and new talent pools for the future.
