Serious Water Main Break Closes 20th Street Viaduct

By Huntingtonnews.net Staff

Charleston, WV (HNN) – West Virginia American crews have secured a water main break in Huntington that flooded streets and a viaduct in the 20th Street and Eighth Avenue area.

The 12-inch main ruptured just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17. Early reports indicated that the underpass roadway itself collapsed. Detours were in effect for about a one block radius.

However, West Virginia American Water employees were able to valve off the main and bring the leak under control within two hours. There was no discernable disruption in water service and a boil water advisory was deemed unnecessary.

West Virginia American Water is grateful to the Huntington Police Department, city street crews and other emergency officials who assisted by blocking off the flooded streets and redirecting traffic. West Virginia American Water apologizes for any inconvenience to motorists or others and will be working with local officials on the best course of action for the cleanup.
