Huntington, WV (HNN) – Brian Carrico, a two–time Marshall University graduate, has been named MU's director of health and safety, Karen Kirtley, assistant vice president for administration, said Friday, July 8, 2005. Carrico, a native of South Point, Ohio, assumed his duties on July 1, 2005.

Kirtley said Marshall is working hard to implement new safety initiatives on campus, and hiring Carrico as the university's first director of health and safety is key to accomplishing those goals.

"We feel that Brian can expand on these initiatives and provide new programs and direction regarding safety on our campus," Kirtley said.

Carrico has worked in industry for nine years, and came to Marshall from Onyx Industrial Services in Ashland, Ky., where he was safety director. He received Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Science degrees from Marshall.

"Marshall University wants to increase the safety level and awareness above and beyond what it has been, and to make it a safe work place for all employees and students," Carrico said. "I want to be actively involved with safety committees presently working at the university, and I look forward to helping create a safer campus by providing training to employees."

Herb Karlet, senior vice president for finance and administration at Marshall, said improving safety awareness and safety practices is a high priority for the university's safety department and director.
