MU Vigil: 'All We Are Saying is Give Peace a Chance'; Will be Repeated Thursdays

by HNN Staff

Huntington, WV (HNN)-- A solemn, hopeful group gathered at the Memorial Student Center plaza at Marshall University Thursday evening, July 14, 2005 to express a simple concept: peace. Inspired by recent events such as the bombings in London, tragedies locally, and continuing violence worldwide, this group met for a Peace Vigil, the humble but earnest and sincere response that everyone can take part in that costs nothing but time.

This group represents the possible shape of peaceful activism to come, according to peace vigil spokeswoman Maura Conway. Rather than being issue-specific, it invites all groups who essentially want peace in the world to come together one night a week and create a peaceful, positive space. No one "agenda" is favored above another, no religion, no party, no tactic -- just the common ground of a moment's peace.

This event will occur every Thursday evening at 8 p.m. on the Memorial Student Center plaza, featuring guests and themes to be announced. Please contact organizers if you'd like to become involved in planning or promotion by emailing: conway1@marshall.edu.
