Marshall’s WMUL-FM Claims 4 MarCom Creative Awards

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Students, along with the faculty manager, from WMUL-FM, Marshall University’s public radio station, received one Platinum Award, two Gold Awards and one Honorable Mention Award in the MarCom Creative Awards 2005 competition. The winners were named in a letter dated Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, from Arlington, TX.
 
The MarCom Creative Awards is an international competition that recognizes achievement by marketing and communication practitioners. Entries are judged by industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. There were 4,613 entries in the MarCom Creative Awards 2005 competition.
 
MarCom’s prestigious Platinum Award is presented to those entries judged to be among the most outstanding entries in the competition. Platinum Winners are recognized for their excellence in terms of quality, creativity and resourcefulness. About 15 percent of the entries won this award. Platinum Winners are listed on the MarCom Creative Awards Web site at www.marcomawards.com.
 
The Gold Award is presented to those entries judged to exceed the high standards of the industry. About 16 percent of the entries received this award. Honorable Mention certificates are granted to those entries that meet the expectations of the judges. About 10 percent of the entries were Honorable Mention winners.
 
MarCom Creative Awards Platinum and Gold winners come from radio stations, advertising and public relations agencies, corporate communication departments, educational institutions, government entities, designers, writers, video production professionals, broadcast and cable operations and other business and individuals throughout the country and several foreign countries.
 
Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, professor of electronic media management in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall University and faculty manager of WMUL-FM, said it is an outstanding accomplishment to be recognized as having produced one of the best Training/Operations Manuals in the country as well as highly regarded documentary scripts and public service announcements.
 
“I am proud and grateful for the honor this Platinum Award bestows on WMUL-FM, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications and Marshall University,” Bailey said. “This operation manual’s success demonstrates to our student and community volunteer staff that their training materials are first rate and combined with their dedication and hard work WMUL-FM will continue to be one of the top college radio stations in the country. The Gold Awards are tributes to the scriptwriting skill and public service commitment of our broadcast students in competition with professional practitioners.”
 
The Platinum Award winning entry by WMUL-FM is in the Employee Publication/Manual/Training category. The winner is “WMUL-FM Operation Manual Revision 2005” written by Bailey, with 2005 revision assistance from Michael Stanley, WMUL-FM Operations Manager, who is a senior from West Hamlin, W.Va. The WMUL-FM Operations Manual was written for student and community volunteer staff of the campus radio station.
 
The two Gold Award winning entries are:
 
Writing/Radio Script – The script for the documentary program “The Huntington Game” was written by Adam Nedeff, a recent graduate from Parkersburg. The script was completed Monday, July 11, 2005. Public Service Announcement – “Didn’t You See?” an in-house public service announcement broadcast in WMUL-FM’s Public Service Announcement rotation from Wednesday, April 13, 2005 through the present time, written and produced by Jen Smith, a senior from Huntington.
 
The Honorable Mention Award winning entry is:
 
Writing/Radio Script – The script for the documentary program “To Change or Not to Change Gameday: The Pros and Cons of Weeknight College Football Games,” was written by Clark Davis, a graduate student from Huntington. The script was completed Monday, May 9, 2005.
