Marshall Graduates More than 2,600 Students

Huntington, WV (HNN) -- Marshall University graduated over 2,600 students on Saturday, May 10, 2008, with more than 900 students walking across the stage at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena and being recognized personally by Marshall University President Dr. Stephen J. Kopp.

Marshall University's 171st Commencement started at 9 a.m. on an ideal spring day, with the processional and the singing of the National Anthem by Kristen A. Pino with her incredible voice.
 
Dr. Stan Maynard gave the invocation, followed by Dr. Kopp introducing guests. A. Michael Perry brought greetings from the Board of Governors.
 
The 2008 commencement address was delivered by Earl Ray Tomblin, West Virginia Senate President and Lt Governor.
 
Honorary degrees were presented by Dr. Kopp to Joan Meyer Weisberg, Doctor of Humane Letters; Arthur Weisberg, Doctor of Humane Letters and to Earl Ray Tomblin, Doctor of Laws. They were hooded by Provost and Senior Vice President Sarah N. Denman.
 
Dr. Larry W. Stickler recognized Marshall University honored faculty members. Graduates receiving academic honors were recognized by Dr. Denman.
 
Doctoral degree candidates were presented first. They were hooded. The presentation of Master's, Bachelor's and Associate Degree's followed with Dr. Kopp personally recognizing each new Marshall 2008 graduate as they walked across the stage with a handshake and congratulations.
 
Of the 2,622 Marshall graduates, 1,529 are undergraduates, 946 are graduate students; 43 students are from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and 104 received associate degrees. The 2,622 number also reflects any student who earned a degree since July, 2007.
