MU Readies for Fall Semester; 'We Are Marshall' Shows on the Field August 22

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Fireworks, hot sunny days, and temptations for watery relief. It’s still summer, but Marshall University has already released some of the events that will welcome incoming freshmen on August 22.
The celebration for incoming freshmen includes a tradition that may have originated during the filming on campus of “We Are Marshall.” Director McG enthusiastically proclaimed he would bring the finished film and show it at Buskirk Field. Well, the premiere took place at the Keith Albee and Marquee Cinemas, but since the DVD went into wide release, “We Are Marshall” at Buskirk Field has become a part of Welcome Weekend.
Author Tim O’Brian whose Vietnam experience, “The Things They Carried,” will be on hand to speak to incoming Freshman at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center. His book continues the successful “one book” program in which all those in the incoming class read the same book before reporting to campus where during the weekend they participate in discussions about the literary work.
Activities include a Class of 2012 photo at the newly rejuvenated Memorial Fountain and a warm up speech by Marshall President Kopp at the Keith.
Meanwhile, advance orientation of new students continues periodically throughout the summer.
