Huntington, WV (HNN) – The Marshall University Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 the hiring of Thomas (TOE-mas) Olivier (o-LIVE-e-a) as the new assistant coach for the Thundering Herd men’s soccer team. Olivier brings extensive youth, club and international experience to MU.
A native of Bonsecours, France, Olivier, 35, has spent the last three years living in Charleston, W.Va., serving as the Director of Coaching for Charleston FC.
“I am ready to get into the college game,” Olivier said. “I am excited to work under Coach Gray; he is very well respected amongst college coaches.”
Head Coach Bob Gray and Olivier met for the first time when Olivier moved to Charleston after spending eight years in Ann Arbor, Mich. working full time for the Ann Arbor Arsenal youth club.
“I worked with Thomas at the ODP level (Olympic Developmental Program) and saw what he brought to the table,” Gray said. “He has a vast knowledge of the game, international experience, a great passion, and he’s a winner.”
Olivier will put his connections at the club level to use as he will be heavily involved in recruiting. He also looks to utilize his international ties to land top recruits in hopes of building a consistent powerhouse in Conference USA.
“I have contacts in the Midwest,” Olivier stated, “But we are looking domestically and internationally. We want to be a C-USA contender every year, and are looking for player that can fit into our system. Being from Europe will help me land players from overseas.”
Olivier replaces Mike Nissim-Sabat. Nissim-Sabat has decided to pursue law school after three years on the Thundering Herd’s staff.
“We are sad to see him go,” Gray said. “He was a dedicated worker for three years and we wish him luck with his future endeavors.”
Marshall, coming off a 3-14-1 record in 2008 will look to rebound under Coach Gray, entering his 14th season as the head coach of MU, and Olivier, who is ready to hit the ground running.
“I am excited to help the team get back to winning after a tough fall in 2008.”
