John Callaway, Chicago Broadcasting Legend, Native of New Martinsville, WV, Dies at 72

John Callaway, a Chicago journalist who created the popular "Chicago Tonight" on Chicago's WTTW public television station, died Tuesday evening, June 23, 2009 of a heart attack in Racine, Wisconsin. He was 72 and was a native of New Martinsville, WV.

He came to Chicago as a college dropout and went to work for the city's legendary City News Bureau, the training ground for many of the city's most famous journalists. He later went into commercial broadcasting and then to public TV where he created "Chicago Tonight" in 1984. He was noted for being an extremely well prepared interviewer, doing his research and reading the books of authors he interviewed.
