Mollohan Praises Economic Stimulus Package

Washington, DC (HNN) – Congressman Alan B. Mollohan said the economic stimulus package passed by the House Friday evening, Sept. 26 would provide new federal money for road construction and other infrastructure improvements throughout West Virginia and also bring immediate assistance to people cuaght in this year’s economic downturn.
“I am particularly pleased that this legislation would deliver our state more than $106 million for highway construction,” Mollohan said. “Road construction is a critical need in West Virginia, and this new funding will allow our State to jump start much-needed projects.” In keeping with the bill’s mission of stimulating the job market, states would be required to give priority to ready-to-go projects that can award bids within four months of enactment. “Since there is no state or local match required, this extra federal money would be a real boon for our state,” Mollohan added.
The Job Creation and Unemployment Relief Act passed the House 264-158. The bill would also provide an additional seven weeks of unemployment benefits for workers who have exhausted their regular unemployment compensation, temporarily increase Medicaid assistance to the states, and provide $2.6 billion in food assistance for seniors, persons with disabilities, and families with children living in poverty. It would also provide $500 million in job training assistance.
In addition to the $12.8 billion allocated nationally for highway and bridge construction, the bill would make the following investments in our infrastructure:

- $5 billion to the Corps of Engineers for flood protection and navigation improvements along our waterways.
- $3 billion to repair crumbling school buildings and upgrade school systems’ technology.
- $7.5 billion for drinking water and sewer projects.
- $1 billion for repair and improvement of public housing properties.
