Washington, DC (HNN) – As the Democrats line up for their further entrenched positions as leaders in the Senate and House, the party has been aligning and realigning committee leadership positions. Morningstar, WV Pub Cast, and others have reported that WV Senator Jay Rockefeller (D) will possibly be the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

The chairmanship has become in the offing since Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) replaced WV Senator Robert C. Byrd as chair of the Appropriations Committee. Rockefeller is next in line to chair the Commerce Committee, but he would apparently have to step down as head of the Intelligence Committee.

The Democrats picked up six seats in the November election, but are still three short of the magic filibuster proof number of 60. Still, several races remain too close to call and recounts will begin shortly. In the latest numbers, Mark Begich, mayor of Anchorage, Alaska, has been pulling ahead of long-term incumbent Ted Stevens, who was convicted by a jury of allowing a supporter to pay for renovations of his home.
