Washington, DC (HNN) – Senator Jay Rockefeller was sworn in Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 for his fifth term in the United States Senate and vowed to continue fighting for West Virginians. Rockefeller, who has been named Chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, said that over the coming six years, much of his focus will be on ways to revive the economy and help people who are struggling in this economic crisis.
“It is my profound honor to begin my fifth term in the United States Senate, to continue fighting for my fellow West Virginians and take on my new role as chairman of the Commerce Committee,” Rockefeller said. “We are facing an economic crisis of extraordinary proportions, and our first priority must be to come together to jump-start our economy and help hurting families. We have critical challenges ahead of us, and it’s time to deliver the real solutions people deserve.”
“The Commerce Committee has a fundamental role to play in rebuilding our economy and our crumbling infrastructure, making America more competitive, and delivering prosperity for families in West Virginia and throughout the country,” Rockefeller continued.
Rockefeller will continue to serve on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence as the panel’s former Chairman. The Senator will also continue his leadership of the Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Health Care and serve as the senior Democrat on the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
“Now more than ever, national security and economic security go hand-in-hand. Reviving our economy will take work on all fronts -- including expanding health care coverage and making it more affordable for all Americans, building nationwide technology infrastructure, and promoting clean energy research. And, I will never stop fighting to get our veterans the benefits and services that they have earned through their service to our nation,” Rockefeller said.
Rockefeller was joined today by his wife, Sharon, son Justin, daughter-in-law Indre, and hundreds of supporters from West Virginia to celebrate his swearing-in ceremony.
