Washington, DC (HNN) – Senator Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, Chairman of the U.S. Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, issued the following statement regarding the resignation on Thursday, April 2, 2009 of NASA Inspector General Robert Cobb, who was appointed by former President George W. Bush in 2002:

“Only a few short weeks ago, Senator McCaskill and I expressed deep concerns to President Obama that the NASA Inspector General, Robert W. Cobb, had been repeatedly accused of stifling investigations, retaliating against whistleblowers and prioritizing social relationships with top NASA officials over proper federal oversight. I respectfully asked that the President take immediate action to put an end to IG Cobb’s conflict of interest and cronyism and remove him from the system.

“News of Robert Cobb’s resignation is certainly welcome and this is an important step forward. I applaud the White House for taking a zero tolerance approach to lax enforcement and oversight. President Obama is setting the tone from the top and holding all employees who serve the American people accountable for improper conduct and just plain not doing their jobs. The time has come to close the door on this troubling chapter for NASA and a fresh start awaits.”

Last month, according to the Orlando (FL) Sentinel, Three U.S. senators drew a bull's eye on NASA's "Moose," calling for the removal of the agency's inspector general, Robert “Moose” Cobb.

More from The Sentinel's "Write Stuff": "The bipartisan trio of senators announced Wednesday, March 18, that they sent a letter to President Barack Obama asking him to remove Cobb from his job as the government’s in-house watchdog on NASA spending.

"The senators –- Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV, D-W.V., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa –- pointed to 'years of complaints and investigation’s into Cobb’s work.'

"The call comes two months after congressional auditors released a report that said Cobb has done little to unearth waste and abuse at the space agency. For example, Cobb saved taxpayers only 36 cents for every dollar spent, while the average for federal inspectors general was $9.49."
