Washington, DC (HNN) -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, issued the following statement on Wednesday, May 20, 2009:

“I applaud President Obama for signing both the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act and the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act into law.

“We need to provide more tools to borrowers and banks to protect homeowners and prevent foreclosures in these tough times and the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Law will do just that.

“Credit card companies must be stopped from using deceptive practices that push American families further into debt. The Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Law puts consumers first, forbids abusive fees and penalties and forces credit card companies to be more clear and forthcoming in their paperwork.

“Both new laws go a long way in putting the American family and consumer first, during a time when they are being shamefully preyed upon. I thank the President for his quick action and commend the Congress for moving this important legislation through swiftly.”
