Washington, DC (HNN) -– Senator Jay Rockefeller on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 said the upcoming improvements at Yeager Airport, which are being funded through $4.9 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (“Recovery Act”) dollars, are a prime example of how this sweeping economic recovery legislation is creating jobs for West Virginians and helping improve the economy.
“Making essential improvements at Yeager will keep people working, keep people moving through West Virginia, bolster our infrastructure, and help revitalize our economy,” said Rockefeller, D-WV. “With more upgrades like this at our airports and schools, to our roads and bridges, and in so many other areas, West Virginia will begin to feel the early benefits of the needed recovery dollars.”
Officials are set to break ground Wednesday, June 24 on Yeager’s new upgrades, which will create an estimated 35 direct construction jobs. Improvements include a canopy over the first lane of the drop-off area, a fire sprinkler system in the entire terminal, new baggage claim equipment, updates to the passenger restrooms, and tiles to replace existing carpet in high-traffic areas.
Through the Recovery Act, the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) received $1.1 billion for distribution to airports nationwide. In addition to these recovery funds, the AIP received $3.6 billion through the federal government’s regular funding cycle – and all $4.7 billion is going toward funding key infrastructure projects at airports across the country and in West Virginia.
Senator Rockefeller, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has been instrumental in securing substantial annual increases in AIP funding. Currently, Rockefeller is fighting for FAA reauthorization that would protect programs and grants serving West Virginia’s small community airports.
