Washington, DC (HNN) -- U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-WV, on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 announced the release of $4,996,900 from the FY09 Omnibus Appropriations Act (H.R. 1105), through the Department of Veterans Affairs for construction projects at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington.
“This funding will allow for the start of construction of a mental health complex on the VAMC campus, which is exactly the type of veteran’s health care facility that we need to build, to provide the necessary services to support our veterans,” said Rahall. “We can no longer tolerate our young men and women silently suffering from substance abuse, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These are real illnesses and just as detrimental to their overall well being as physical injuries.”
The VA plans to renovate a vacant 15,000-sq. foot building and relocate all out-patient mental health services to the renovated building adjacent to the current center. The ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive mental health care facility on the Huntington VAMC campus, which will include special facilities for PTSD treatment and substance abuse rehabilitation.
“This project represents the largest of several construction projects that will create the mental health complex on the VA grounds,” explained Edward H. Seiler, Huntington VA Medical Center Director. “Once the facility is finished there will be a total of four buildings that will have been renovated and built out to accommodate the additional patient care and treatment services.”
“Today we continue to recognize the need to look after and treat the mental health of our veterans just as much as their bodies,” said Rahall. “I am proud that the Huntington VA is investing in the long term mental health needs of our dedicated men and women in uniform.”
