Washington, DC (HNN) -- U.S. Representative Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) on Wednesday, July 22 encouraged everyone with an interest in the future of the mining industry to attend the 2009 Miners’ Celebration, slated to take place July 23 – 24, 2009 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center in Beckley, WV. The two-day program has been organized by the Mine Safety Technology Consortium (MSTC), established in 2008 with Rep. Rahall’s leadership as a public-private partnership between industry and collaborating academic institutions in West Virginia, to encourage innovative technology development and information exchange for improving and ensuring the health and safety of miners.

“I created the Consortium to serve as a catalyst for transforming mining know-how into superior coal mine health and safety products and services, including training technologies,” said Rep. Rahall. “This Celebration is just the kind of program I had envisioned to address vitally important issues and needs related to the safety of miners. I am particularly proud of the progress, ingenuity and commitment of the home grown entrepreneurs from southern West Virginia who are participating, and applied their talents to the noble cause of the friends’ and neighbors’ livelihood.”

The 2009 Miners’ Celebration is a free and open forum to celebrate the West Virginia coal miner. The conference program and guest speaker presentations will focus on West Virginia’s mining history, as well as provide a forum for showcasing technology innovations for mining in the 21st Century, and highlight the new generation of miner. Details for attending are available from MSTC: 304-981-6221 or www.wvmstc.org.
