Washington, DC (HNN) – U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall, D-WV, (D-W.Va.) said on Thursday, July 30, 2009 that he secured $1.5 million for Department of Defense (DoD) technology development by Vandalia Research, Inc. in Huntington, in the FY 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act (H.R. 3326), which passed the House of Representatives Thursday.
“This year we have seen how quickly a flu virus can spread not only across communities, but around the World,” said Rahall. “The funds I obtained will help our State and our Nation prepare and prevent pandemic outbreaks and protect against bioterrorism, keeping our families and our communities safe. Vandalia Research are entrepreneurs in the truest sense, blazing new trails, all the while strengthening their company and community.”
The $1.5 million in funding secured by Rep. Rahall for Vandalia Research, Inc. in Huntington, will collaborate with Inovio Biomedical in San Diego, CA to work with the U.S. Army on applications for their technology. This technology will allow for the development of vaccines and medicines to prevent or cure severe viral pandemic diseases based on Vandalia’s linear DNA fragments that will expedite and enhance the quality of vaccines. In addition to the vaccines, the program will include the development of an advanced system for vaccine delivery to patients, which will provide the government with the capability to react quickly to combat pandemics or bioterrorist attacks. Through this funding, the program would be able to create three to five highly skilled jobs immediately with the potential for additional jobs as the research progresses.
“Congressman Rahall has been supportive of our efforts as a startup company in West Virginia, we believe in part because he recognizes that small businesses represent the future and are engines for job creation,” said Derek Gregg, Vandalia Research, Inc.,. “More importantly, Congressman Rahall knows that we are building new technology that has great potential to affect human health worldwide by enabling the rapid production of vaccines not only against natural threats, but also against biological weapons.”
Vandalia Research was formed in March 2004 originating from Marshall University before becoming an independent business in Huntington. Vandalia has placed strong emphasis on research and development, and specializes on novel biotechnology instrumentation and advanced biotechnology manufacturing techniques.
Other H.R. 3326 appropriations include funding for a 3.4% military pay increase for active duty and Selected Reserve personnel, $29.9 billion to provide our troops with top of the line medical care including funding for mental health and PTSD treatment and over $490 million for family advocacy programs and an Army National Guard Family Assistance Center. Additionally, the bill provides top of the line military equipment to protect our troops and defend the United States both here and abroad.
FY2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act (H.R. 3326) passed the House of Representatives on Thursday and now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
