A Handful of School Dominated Prep Sports Action in 2004-05 Season

Huntington (HNN) – High school sports are often competitive, but the 2004-05 school year was definitely unique as single schools dominated most sports.

Locally, Cabell Midland had great success in the spring seasons, but the fall sports took a dive early with basketball losing to eventual champion Huntington.

After the new year fell, no team was as successful as the Knights, who won the track and softball championships while making it to the state baseball semifinals.

While the Knights were dominant in the 2005 portion of the school year, other smaller schools dominated their respective classes.

Logan, who hails from class AA, struggled in football, but managed to gain its first basketball championship in years after dominating the latter half of the 20th century while at class AAA.

The Wildcats came back in the spring by winning the class AA baseball championship at Appalachian Power Park a few days ago, capping an impressive run for a community that once ruled West Virginia athletics.

Logan was led by standout Lou Green, who helped lead the Wildcats to a basketball title by averaging double figures in rebounds and points in each contest. Green's leadership showed as he cheered on teammates while struggling through shooting and foul woes during the basketball state tournament.

The emotional leader then did more talking on the field by pitching the Wildcats to the class AA baseball championship, a feat that Logan is accustomed to playing for each season.

While Logan's accomplishments go beyond those of Cabell Midland's, no team was as dominant in sports as Wheeling Central.

The Maroon Knights started the march in December by winning the state football title.

Three months later, Wheeling Central celebrated at the Charleston Civic Center as the team celebrated their fourth basketball title in a row.

Just last week, the Maroon Knights completed the high school equivalent of the Triple Crown as they captured the baseball crown in Charleston.

With those teams seeing senior-laden dominance, it begs the question as to what team will emerge as next season's dominant power.
