Morgantown (HNN) — With all high school seasons now over, the annual North–South series will now be in full swing this week with softball, boys basketball and football taking place.
The softball squads will start the series with a tripleheader at Buffalo High School's softball complex on Thursday evening, June 16, 2005.
The game will consist of three five–inning contests starting at 6 p.m. with presentations of plaques and awards during the intermissions between games.
Dave Mosser from Ritchie County will lead the North squad while Chapmanville's Ronnie Ooten leading the South team.
With the softball contests leading things off on Thursday, the basketball contest will take place on Friday night, June 17, 2005, with festivities starting at 7 p.m. at Capital High School.
Festivities for the contest include a free throw shooting competition, three–point shooting competition and a slam–dunk contest before the actual game takes place.
The South squad has dominated the 22 all–time contests, holding a 19–3 series lead, including a 108–105 victory in last year's contest.
A major height advantage works into the South's favor in this year's game with the team boasting of three 6–foot–5 players and 6–foot–9 center Adam Fletcher from St. Albans. Fletcher is a Miami (Ohio) recruit.
The North squad's biggest threat is Morgantown's Chris Carey, who is most noted for knocking South Charleston out of the AAA state tournament with a last second shot. Carey will have to play much bigger than his 6–foot–4 frame if he wants to give the North their fourth win in the series.
The Saturday, June 18 festivities will highlight the 2005 North–South competition when the annual Wendy's North–South football classic takes place at Laidley Field.
Game–time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with tickets being $6 in advance or $8 for day–of–game purchases.
The South has also dominated this series, leading 31–17–3 overall, but the North has won five of the last six games, including last year's 15–14 victory.
