Huntington, WV (HNN)— With Marshall’s football team awaiting the start of
2005 practices, head coach Mark Snyder is getting the 2006 recruiting season
in motion, landing his third verbal commitment of the summer.
This time, Snyder was even able to snatch a potential recruit away from his
former coaching headquarters, Ohio State University.
Chad Schofield verbally committed to the Thundering Herd on Tuesday
afternoon, July 5, 2005, turning down offers from Pittsburgh and former MAC
rival Miami (Ohio) and heavy interest from the Buckeyes and Illinois of the
Big Ten.
The 6-foot-4, 320-pound lineman for the Strongsville, Ohio Mustangs is the
key cog in an offensive line that has gained 2000 yards rushing in each of
the past two seasons.
Schofield will already be used to playing in a collegiate type atmosphere as
the Mustangs play in Ohio’s Division I, the largest class for football.
The Mustangs have gone 15-5 in Ohio’s toughest division while Schofield has
been a starter there, losing in the regional quarterfinals in both seasons.
In the 2004 season, Strongsville lost to Cleveland-area powerhouse Cleveland
St. Ignatius 48-21 in the regional quarterfinals.
Marshall’s move to a new conference and the imminent growth of the program
were definite bonuses for Schofield, who was looking to make the decision
early to focus on his senior year.
The increased recruiting efforts in Ohio, Snyder’s home state, have produced
two early verbal commitments as Schofield and Ironton’s Darius Lewis are
scheduled to don the green and white in 2006.
They will be joined by Wayne tight end/linebacker Trevor Marcum who also has
verbally committed this summer.
Schofield and the Mustangs open their season on Aug. 26 as they host Solon.
