Charleston, WV (HNN) — Yovani Gallardo threw eight strong innings to lead the West Virginia Power to a 2-1 victory over the Hagerstown Suns on Sunday, July 10, 2005.

Gallardo pitched a gem for the Power, allowing only two hits and one earned run in the victory.

Hagerstown got a single by Carlos Gomez with one out in the first inning, but did not get its next hit until two outs in the eighth inning on a double by Ryan Coultas.

West Virginia manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.

Alcides Escobar singled to left center field to lead off the game and then stole second base.

Hasan Rasheed grounded out to first base to move Escobar over to third base before Grant Richardson’s single to right field brought home the first run of the game.

The contest was a pitcher’s duel for the next six innings as neither team could really mount any threat.

West Virginia mounted a threat in the fifth inning when Escobar once again singled and stole second base.

Rasheed then singled to right field and Escobar tried scoring on the play, but Ambiorix Concepcion threw a strike to catcher Jesus Flores beating Escobar by a step and ending the inning.

Hagerstown was finally able to get on the board in the eighth inning as Gallardo walked leadoff batter Russ Triplett.

Following a fly-out, Gallardo then threw a wild pitch that moved Triplett to second. Gallardo was able to get James Burt out on a fly to deep center field for two outs.

However, Coultas stepped up with two outs in the eighth and hit a line drive to left field for an EBI double to tie the game.

Gallardo was able to then escape the jam by getting Derran Watts to ground out to Will Lewis at second base.

West Virginia then went to work in the bottom half of the inning as Rasheed led off the inning with a single to right field.

Ryan Braun then sacrificed Rasheed to second base with a bunt before Richardson came up again with a chance to play hero.

Richardson delivered for the team with a double to left field to score Rasheed with the game-winner.

Robert Hinton came on and closed out the ninth inning to preserve the victory for the Power.

West Virginia moved to 7-10 in the second half of the season with the victory while Hagerstown dropped to 5-12 with the loss.

The Power now hit the road for a four-game series with the Lakewood Blue Claws starting Tuesday night, July 12, 2005 at 7:05 p.m.
