Huntington, WV (HNN)- The Mountain State Titans lost their first
football game of the season to the Akron (Ohio) Dolphins 36-33 at A.D.
Lewis Community Center Field on Saturday afternoon, July 23, 2005.
The long hard-fought non-televised football game lasted nearly
four hours, with many delays from penalties and disagreements.
Televised games will usually run around 3 1/2 hours. The game
finished right before darkness at around 8:15 p.m.
Akron took the lead 34-33 with 4:52 left in the game
and added a two-point conversion. The Titans got one last chance to
win with 1:59 left to play, but couldn't get the needed first down
to sustain any drive. Akron took over the possession and ran the
clock out to win the game.
Titans Coach Martin Berry wanted every second he could get for the
last drive. He asked the clock operator (approved by the officials) to
put an extra second on the 1:59 clock.
The clock operator responded, "One second is not going
to help you, brother."
Unfortunately for the Titans he was right as they saw their 4-0 perfect start in the Ohio Valley Football League come to an end.
