Huntington, WV (HNN) - With the Thundering Herd on the brink of its first year in Conference USA athletics, the athletic department is busy filling vacancies before the start of fall sports.
If you haven't heard, the vacancies are filling quickly.
Within the span of two days, Marshall was able to land an assistant coach for women's soccer, a new director of operations for men's basketball, two assistants for the women's softball team and an assistant athletic trainer.
On Thursday, Marshall was busy making changes to nameplates and having meet 'n' greet sessions as four new personnel members added Marshall University to their resumes.
Matt Gwilliam was named as the new assistant coach to Chris Kane's women's soccer program. Gwilliam comes to Marshall from The Citadel, where he served in the same capacity.
Gwilliam also served as interim coach from January to May of this year, something Marshall coach Chris Kane thinks will come in handy to the Thundering Herd program.
"He has had experience as an interim head coach at the Division I level," Kane said. "He will add a lot to our program as we head into Conference USA."
The Marshall men's basketball program named Kyle Getter as the new director of men's basketball operations, replacing Micah Shrewsberry, who became head coach at Indiana University-South Bend this off-season.
Getter has worked with Marshall head coach Ron Jirsa and assistant Josh Postorino previously at Dayton where he was a graduate manager in 2002-03.
"Kyle, Josh and I have worked together in the past, so I'm certain his attention to detail and his communication skills will help us get the job done here at Marshall," Jirsa said.
Getter has worked as the director of operations at Wright State for the past two seasons.
Marshall softball coach Shonda Stanton was doubly busy on Thursday, July 21, 2005 as she announced a new assistant and graduate assistant during the course of the day.
Shane Winkler was named a new assistant and will work with the outfield after serving as a co-head coach for the Danville (Ill.) Area Community College, where he specialized as the hitting coach.
Winkler also has been playing minor league baseball the last two seasons for the River City Rascals of the Frontier League.
New graduate assistant Nicole Brock is more of a local product, coming from Morehead State (Ky.)
Brock graduated in 2003 with a degree in exercise science where she maintained a 3.598 grade point average while studying kinesiotherapy.
Brock was also a two-year captain for Morehead State and currently ranks fourth in career home runs for the Eagles.
"It is exciting to have our staff finally set in place," Stanton said. "They both complement our staff very well and bring a lot of energy."
The last addition of the two-day period will help all of the other assistants understand the physical ailments of their players.
Jeff Carrico announced that Tara Conway would serve as the school's new assistant athletic trainer.
Conway comes to Marshall via the University of South Alabama where she earned a master's degree in exercise science.
Conway will oversee all women's sports, with special emphasis in women's basketball and softball.
