Charleston, WV (HNN) -For the second time in three games, West Virginia
Power third baseman Ryan Braun hit a home run in the final inning to push
the Power to a victory in South Atlantic League action.
Friday night, July 29, 2005, Braun came up with two outs and Hernan
Iribarren on first after Hickory pitcher Dustin Craig walked him.
Braun wasted no time in disposing of the Crawdads as he took the first pitch
from Craig over the left center field wall to give the Power a 6-4 victory.
Hickory opened up a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning after loading the bases
with no one out. Mike Carlin then hit a single to score the first two runs
before a sacrifice fly by Mike Cockrell gave Hickory a three-run cushion.
The lead held up until West Virginia finally got on the board in the sixth
when Braun hit an RBI triple that scored Alcides Escobar.
A solo shot by Dan Schwartzbauer increased the lead back to three in the top
of the seventh, but West Virginia tied it in the bottom half of the inning
with three runs on four hits.
Josh Brady singled home Carlos Corporan who had led the inning off with a
double. Josh Murray was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second
with one out, but Adam Mannon struck out swinging to put the Crawdads one
out away from escaping danger.
However, Escobar singled to score Brady and Iribarren followed with a single
to score Muuray and tie the contest. Braun then struck out to end the
inning.
Braun also hit a home run on Wednesday night as the Power defeated Lexington
5-4 in Lexington.
With the victory over Hickory, West Virginia is now 17-17 on the season
while Hickory falls to 21-13 with the loss.
Hickory and West Virginia will lock up Saturday night, July 30, 2005 at 7:05
p.m. and end the series with a 2:05 p.m. contest on Sunday afternoon, July
31, 2005 as the team continues its eight-game home stand.
