SPORTS: Men’s Soccer Claims 1-0 Victory Over Penn State in Exhibition
Jira Cooley scores team’s only goal in second half

University Park, PA (HNN) – Senior Jira Cooley’s (Seattle, Wash.) lone goal in the second half guided Marshall to a 1-0 win over Penn State Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008.

Cooley’s goal found the back of the net in the 59th-minute crediting the assist to sophomore Kendall Sutton (Wheaton, Md.).

In the contest, the Thundering Herd had three shots including Cooley’s strike. Senior Sterling Flunder (Bothell, Wash.) and sophomore Sammy Boateng (Accra, Ghana) each contributed a shot.

The Pennsylvania ’s native son, senior goalkeeper Greg Walter (Slippery Rock, Pa.) played the entire game and had four saves in goal.

“We were going against a school that is well-known and very talented,” head coach Bob Gray said. “I’m very pleased with our team’s effort.”

Just as in the first exhibition, Marshall was able to make substitutions and changes to the line-up as coach Gray wanted to do.

“We were able to play a variety of guys especially getting playing time for our freshmen,” he said.

Freshmen Dustin Dawes (Nashville, Tenn.) and Kyle Sniatecki (Depew, N.Y.) both played the entire 90-minute contest.

The Herd will wrap-up their exhibition season with a game against VMI Friday Aug. 22 at Sam Hood Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
