Irving, TX (HNN) – Senior Dustin Dawes was named to the All-Conference USA First Team, while Daniel Withrow was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year to lead seven Herd players in receiving conference honors, as announced by the league office on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.
Dawes is the first MU player in program history to be named to the C-USA first-team. The Nashville, Tenn., native tallied seven goals and two assists on the season to lead Marshall in goals and points. Dawes registered four game-winning goals, which was the most of any player in C-USA.
“I am very pleased for Dustin,” head coach Bob Gray said. “He has been our engine all season and he is very deserving of the honor.”
Withrow’s phenomenal season in net for the Herd was recognized by coaches around the league as he was the awarded C-USA Freshman of the Year. The accolades don’t stop there for the conference leader in saves percentage (.808). Withrow was also named to the All-Conference USA Second Team and to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
Representing Marshall on the All-Conference USA Third Team is defender Kendall Sutton and midfielder Matt Butler. Sutton anchored the back-line all season for the Herd while Butler, MU’s center midfielder, had three goals and three assists on the season.
“Kendall [Sutton] is on of the best defenders in the league,” Gray said. “He and Daniel [Withrow] are huge reasons why we have cut our goal differential in half from last season.”
The Herd’s talent from its younger players is evident as MU landed three players on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Joining Withrow on the all-freshman list is forward Tom Jackson and midfielder Devin Perkins.
Jackson found the back of the net five times and had two assists in 11 games for the Herd. The mid-season addition scored four of his five goals in Conference USA matches. Perkins stepped into the starting center midfield position halfway through the season and ended the regular season with three goals and one assist. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native recorded the game winning goal against Memphis.
“Obviously this bodes well for the future,” Gray said. “Everyone knows about Withrow; Tom Jackson took the conference by storm and Devin played very consistent for us.”
With all the hard work on the field, Marshall’s dedication in the classroom was also noticed as Dawes and Matt Dickerson were members of the All-Conference USA Academic Team.
“It shows that our student-athletes get it done on the field and in the classroom,” Gray said.
Marshall is in Tulsa, Okla., this weekend for the C-USA tournament. MU is the No. 2 seed as they posted a 6-2 conference record and will face No. 3 UAB on Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m CST (6 p.m. EST).
