More than 1500 women in West Virginia are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. Although mortality rates are decreasing, an estimated 270 women will still die from the disease this year. IRVING, Tx. - Marshall senior defensive lineman Vinny Curry was selected as Conference USA’s Defensive Player of the Week Monday, following the Herd’s 24-20 Homecoming victory over Rice on Saturday. Curry is the third Marshall defender to win the award this season, following linebackers George Carpenter (Sept. 12) and Tyson Gale (Oct. 3), and it is the fifth time a Herd player has won a weekly honor (two Special Teams honors for punter Kase Whitehead).

Tulsa, Okla. – Marshall University’s women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Sunday at Hurricane Stadium. After opening the first period with two initial goals, Tulsa closed the door in the second by adding an insurance goal within the first twenty minutes of period two. With the defeat The Herd falls to 3-10-3 (1-5-2 C-USA), while The Golden Hurricane improve its record to 10-5-2 (4-3-1 C-USA).

DALLAS, Texas – Marshall University’s women’s soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker Friday night against the SMU Mustangs in Dallas, Texas at Westcott Field. The Herd got down early, but posted the game-tying goal a minute into the second period. Yet it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs delivered the game-winning goal with under ten minutes to play in regulation. With the loss Marshall falls to 3-9-3 (1-4-2 C-USA), while SMU improves to 9-5-1 (5-1-1 C-USA).

Irving, Texas – Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Kerns was selected as Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her exceptional play over the weekend. Lindsey posted two shutouts in both games over the weekend against No.24 UCF and Southern Miss. While opposing the Knights, Kerns slammed the door on six shots, including diving stops with two minutes to play in regulation and within a minute to play of the final overtime period. Furthermore, her tactical defense forced several missed opportunities by Central Florida.

HUNTINGTON, WV – Marshall women’s soccer team showcased the talent of its defense Friday night holding No. 16 University of Central Florida to zero goals in a 0-0 tie after regulation and two overtimes. The tie give The Herd one point in conference rankings, and pushes MU’s record to 2-8-3 in the season. In the last three competitions Marshall has played, The Herd tallied a 1-0 loss to No. 6 Memphis on a last-minute goal, a 1-1 tie to UAB, and a 0-0 tie to No. 16 UCF. Marshall looks to continue their aggressiveness going forward to stay in the mix of Conference USA contenders.
