Charlie’s Boys Come to Bluestone Conference Center
Article and Photos by Cheryl Miller
Summers County, WV (Special to HNN) -- For years I’ve jokingly told
Bluestone Patrons that spring officially starts when the bulldozer and
backhoe pull into the parking lot of the conference center.
Spring happened very early this year, January to be exact. We decided to
take advantage of the incredibly warm January weather and break ground on
three major projects. Excavation began at the Hogan Site, the once Wagon
Site and behind the pool. Two new bathhouses were designed to meet the
needs of Bluestone’s program and facilities. A huge 40 by 60 foot picnic
shelter would be erected at the Hogan’s to prevent rain from altering Hogan
programming. Platforms for tents would be a welcome addition .
For many years church members from the Huntington, Charleston and
Parkersburg areas have been volunteering their time here at Bluestone. This
year the infamous Charlie’s Boys put in a week of sweat and fellowship as
the hammered away at the new Explorer Site Bathhouse. Stories were shared
and Dutch Oven desserts were made and they didn’t even let a few raindrops
dampen their spirits or work ethic. It is important to note that all work
done on all three projects, except for the initial excavation, was done
completely with volunteer service.
The Hogan Picnic Shelter is ready for use and the Explorer Bathhouse is
nearing completion. Four new tent platforms will also allow for dryer
camping out at the new Explorer site. Much appreciation goes out to these
guys who left their comfortable homes in the Huntington area, traveled three
hours south, and gave their time and knowledge to a worthy cause. We love
you guys. Thank you and God Bless!
