THE MANCHIN REPORT: Preserving, Enhancing Our Nation's Natural Resources
The Hon. Joe Manchin, Gov.
by Joe Manchin
Governor of West Virginia
Charleston, WV (HNN) - Earlier this week at the annual summer meeting of our
nation's governors in Des Moines, Iowa, the members of the National
Governor's Association (NGA) selected me to serve aschairman of the NGA's Natural Resource Committee.
I accept this post with much appreciation toward my fellow colleagues across the nation, and I look
forward to getting to work on issues that are critical to our state and nation's
most precious resources.
The NGA Natural Resources Committee, a nonpartisan committee, develops state
and federal policy recommendations on energy and environmental issues.
Innovation is the key for developing both successful cultivation and energy strategies. By
creating sound, socially responsible policies, we can meet our supply and
demand while improving conservation and efficiency.
Historically, West Virginia's role as one of the nation's energy leaders
cannot be understated. Coal, oil, natural gas and timber have powered the
West Virginia economy for decades, and continue to be the backbone of our state
and national economy.
Today, American families are struggling to meet the rising costs associated
with their energy needs. Whether you live in a small town or a metropolitan area,
every family is dealing with soaring gas prices and increasing cooling
bills. As the leader of one of our nation's most resource-rich states, I am committed
to developing and implementing real energy solutions that will prevent unneeded
financial burdens on businesses that depend upon transportation to move
commerce and the American families that benefit from those good paying jobs.
By looking outside the box, we can loosen the grip of reliance on
international oil, strengthen our domestic economy and expand the number of people working
in our energy-related industries. The preservation and use of natural resources
are mutual issues that consequently impact our national security, environment
and economy a matter that all 50 states must deal with on a daily basis.
Working together in an environmentally conscious manner, we can preserve our
Nation's great outdoor heritage while utilizing our traditional energy
sources - oil, coal, natural gas, water and wind - for the development of new energy
initiatives.
Energy is the key to our economic survival, and we must constantly look for
new ways to enhance the quality and quantity of these precious resources. I look
forward to sharing the concerns of our state on a national level and giving
West Virginia's energy industries an important voice in the development of
national energy strategies that will protect and boost our resource-driven economy.
