National GOP Senate Committee to Run Anti–Byrd Ads in WV This Week

by HNN Staff

Charleston, WV (HNN)–Veteran Charleston Daily Mail political reporter and columnist Don Surber has brought the big political story this week to West Virginia on his blog, www.donsurber.blogspot.com: The National Republican Senate Committee will begin broadcasting ads against U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D–WV) on Friday, July 29, 2005 for the first time in 23 years.

According to Surber, the prospect of a Capito/Byrd race may be one reason for these ads. Surber quotes the Capitol Hill insider newspaper, "Roll Call," on the subject, too:

Republican strategists would not reveal the total cost and scope of the ads, but said that the NRSC is spending in the range of tens of thousands of dollars on its first television buy of the cycle. The initial buy, which will be concentrated in the large media markets in the state, may be expanded later.

Some Republican sources suggest that this may be a deal struck by Capito's father, former three–term Republican Governor Arch Moore, to help soften Byrd's numbers up before his daughter makes a final decision sometime this fall on the race. Recent polls show Capito anywhere from three to ten points behind Byrd with more than a year to go.
