Hinton, WV (HNN) – The ongoing restoration of the vintage Hinton train
station is progressing with phase 3 nearing completion. This involves the
installation of an underground drainage system for the century-old brick
structure.
The third phase also includes a new concrete platform and attractive
architectural fencing between the station and the train tracks. With phase 3
nearing completion, an estimated $485,000 has been spent for the project.
The station’s slate roof has been replaced, along with many of the windows
and woodwork. The city of Hinton has already applied for phase four funding.
The total restoration project is expected to cost $1.5 million.
The station serves Amtrak’s Cardinal (Trains 50 and 51) service between
Chicago and New York. The Cardinal operates three days a week: Sunday,
Wednesday and Friday, providing southern West Virginia with economical
public transportation to the outside world – a bonus in this era of
skyrocketing gasoline prices. The Hinton station serves the
Princeton-Bluefield area, as well as travelers from Tazewell and Wytheville,
VA.
