“I am proud that Nick undertook this personal and educational odyssey and honored to present him, on behalf of the United States Congress and the State of West Virginia, with such a prestigious award in recognition for his work,” said Rahall.

The Congressional Award was created by Congress to honor and encourage volunteer public service and recognize the unsung accomplishments of young Americans throughout the United States. The Award provides a unique opportunity for young people to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character and foster community service, personal development.

Of the 25,000 young Americans working toward this award, Porter was one of only 237 students to receive the Gold Medal recognition from the U.S. Congress this year. Participant must be between the ages of 14 and 23 and must spend two years or more completing at least 400 hours of community service, 200 hours of personal development/physical fitness activities and a four-night Expedition or Exploration.

Porter volunteered his time with fire prevention and safety activities, recreational and environmental projects, and various Boy Scout service activities. He also attended a People to People Leadership Conference in Washington, DC and is preparing to serve as Secretary General of the Model UN and a committee Co-Chair for Youth in Government.

“Volunteerism and public service are important at any age,” said Rahall. “To see such commitment to bettering our community at such an early age gives me great hope for our future. Nick achievements are an inspiration to us all.”
