West Virginia Voter Fraud Advisory Issued by Secretary of State

Charleston, WV (HNN) – Preliminary investigations have revealed hundreds of fraudulent voter registrations , Secretary of State Betty Ireland told a Thursday, Sept. 25 press conference. The United States Attorney’s Office, the FBI, United States Postal Service and Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating crimes that may have been committed by filing fraudulent voter registration forms.
“My office takes the matter of election fraud seriously, and every precaution is being made to make sure no voter is disenfranchised by this activity,” Secretary Ireland stated.
According to the press release, similar activities have been occurring in other states too. Individuals paid by third party groups to register voters are responsible for the challenged voter registration applications.
West Virginia’s illegal activity initially only pointed to Kanawha County, but computer generated report indicate similar activity in Monongalia and Jefferson Counties. All 55 West Virginia county clerks have been alerted to watch for possible fraudulent activity.
“Voter registration drives by third parties are perfectly legal in West Virginia, and we encourage groups to undertake the effort to register our citizen’s to vote,” Ireland said. “However, when these voter registration drives are not carried out in a responsible and legal manner, significant problems can result,” Ireland cautioned.
The Secretary of State issued the following precautions:
1. You do not need to register AGAIN, if you are already registered to vote. Remember this if you are approached by a group seeking to register voters.
2. If you register using forms provided by a third party, fill out and sign the form yourself. Do not allow anyone else to sign it for you.
3. Do not provide voter information data over the phone. Ask the caller to mail you the registration form then send it to the county clerk’s office yourself.
4. If you If you receive a notice, or a letter, from your county clerk indicating there has been a change to your voter registration status that you did not initiate, call your county clerk immediately and advise that the change was not made by you.
5. If you are voting for the very first time, and you have not already provided verification of your name and address to your county clerk, current law requires that you provide this information at the polls, only when you go to vote for the very first time.
