Snowshoe, WV (HNN) -- Opening Day of the 2008-2009 Season at Snowshoe Mountain is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 26. Snowshoe plans to have at least 10 slopes and 39 acres of terrain open on Opening Day.

Thinking about Utah or Colorado for a skiing trip? Forget about it: Snowshoe Resort has now received more than 30” of snow since the first flakes of the season in late October and Opening Day conditions should be some of the best on record at Snowshoe.

An added bonus: You can drive to Snowshoe and it will cost less now that gasoline prices are down. Think about the hassles of airline travel these days -- and the expense. Snowshoe has made 3-4 feet of snow on nearly 32 acres, with scattered snowmaking coverage on additional acreage across the mountain. The last snow measurement took place at 10a m Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Thireen inches of new snow overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, 21” of snow since Saturday night. Snowmaking equipment has been on around the clock since Saturday night, Nov. 15. An additional 12” of natural snow possible before Wednesday, Nov. 18, with snow showers in the National Weather Service forecast through Friday. Snowmaking conditions around the clock at least through the weekend.

An upside-down ski resort, the resort villages at Snowshoe sit atop 57 downhill skiing slopes rather than at their bases. But the Snowshoe ski resort is more than just skiing and snow sports -- it's a year-round home for lovers of the outdoors. Shops, galleries, restaurants, and clubs cap the summit on West Virginia's second-highest mountain peak.
